Fancy dances - answers   

The following list shows the pronunciation of words in RP and other Southern English dialects. The PALM vowel is shown bolded, while the TRAP vowel is used in the unbolded words. Words that fluctuate between PALM and TRAP in the South of England are underlined; generally speaking, younger speakers use TRAP.

In the Midlands, North of England, and the USA, all these words are TRAP words.

*mass: traditionally, Catholics have the PALM vowel and Protestants the TRAP vowel.
