Phonetics 1 - Exercise 3 ANSWERS
These are the points you must bring out to get full marks:
- In GA, both BATH and TRAP words have the same vowel,
, but in RP
they have different vowels,
for PALM and
for TRAP.
(This is the important part: you must state that BATH words have different
pronunciations in RP and in GA).
- The TRAP vowel is a fairly open (or low) front vowel, while the PALM vowel
is an open (or low) back vowel.
- TRAP is a lax vowel.
- PALM is a tense vowel.
